Hong Kong Soccer 7s: Villa cruise through with three wins
Villa completed a clean sweep to comfortably top Group A on day one of the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens.
Ben Petty's team earned victories over Kitchee, Hong Kong Football Club and Newcastle without conceding a single goal.
It means the five-time champions will now face Japanese outfit Kashima Antlers in Sunday's main quarter-final.
The claret and blues made a solid start, Harry McKirdy's first-half goal earning them a slender 1-0 victory over Hong Kong First Division outfit Kitchee.
The second game against hosts Hong Kong Football Club began in similar fashion with McKirdy netting early on.
Keinan Davis then scored twice to complete a 3-0 success which guaranteed qualification to the knockout stages with a game to spare.
And the young lions rounded off a perfect day by edging 2012 winners Newcastle in the Group A decider.
Rushian Hepburn-Murphy forced Magpies keeper Ben Smith into a superb double save, before Corey Blackett-Taylor converted at the far post to break the deadlock.
"I'm delighted with the efforts of the team on day one," said coach Petty.
"We have shown great energy in all our games and we are learning from every game.
"Khalid Abdo has led the team superbly and we have shown some great technical ability against some very physical opposition.
"The challenge for us now is to recover quickly and come back refreshed to go all out to win tomorrow.
"The lads are full of confidence and enjoying their football."
