Hong Kong Soccer 7s: Brilliant young guns secure sixth title
Villa extended their record haul of HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens titles by winning a sixth crown in emphatic style.
After completing a clean sweep of victories in Saturday's Group A fixtures, the young lions repeated the feat by seeing off Kashima Antlers, Wellington Phoenix and West Ham United in the knockout stages today.
Harry McKirdy led the charge for the claret and blues, who claimed the Golden Boot with six goals.
Ben Petty's team began the day with an action packed last-eight encounter against Japanese side Kashima Antlers.
After falling a goal behind, McKirdy hit back before Rushian Hepburn-Murphy scored twice to make it 3-1.
And a penalty save from Matija Sarkic ensured Villa's passage into the semi-finals.
Wellington Phoenix of New Zealand stood in our way of a final spot but McKirdy continued his sparkling form by netting both goals in a 2-0 success.
It set up an all-English final with last year's runners-up West Ham.
Villa's chances were dealt a huge blow early when Sarkic suffered a dislocated shoulder, which meant defender Mitchell Clark had to take over between the sticks.
However, the loss of the Montenegrin keeper caused minimal disruption as the youngsters ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from McKirdy and Hepburn-Murphy.
Victory over the Hammers sealed a sixth title for Villa, adding to the club's triumphs in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
VILLA SQUAD: Matija Sarkic (Gk), Mitchell Clark, Oscar Borg, Jordan Cox, Callum O'Hare, Harry McKirdy, Corey Blackett-Taylor, Keinan Davis, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Khalid Abdo.
