Match report: Yeovil Town Ladies 4-2 Villa Ladies

Villa Ladies fell to defeat despite leading against Yeovil at Huish Park.

First half goals from Hannah George and Katie Wilkinson set the claret and blues on their way before a second half hat-trick from Sarah Wiltshire and Nicola Cousins strike turned the second tier clash on its head.

The pre-match message from head coach Joe Hunt was clear - to make amends for Tuesday night's defeat.

And they were at it from the off. Villa, dressed in their yellow and black away kit, started on the front foot, enjoying the lion's share of the possession.

In the first minute, winger Beth Merrick picked up the ball from distance - her effort held by Charlotte Haynes in the home goal.

Known for their wide play, and in particular, danger players Wiltshire and Helen Bleazard down the flanks, the Glovers grew into the contest with goalkeeper Jess Myers more than playing her part to keep the hosts at bay.

The lively Bleazard unleashed a power-driver, expertly pushed around the post by Myers.

Merrick's set piece delivery caused havoc for Yeovil's defence - her lofted free-kick parried behind by the Glovers' stopper.

Bleazard then turned provider - her low cross met by the onrushing Wiltshire - her first-time strike cleanly saved by Villa's No.1.

Somewhat surprisingly given their previous warnings of Merrick's threat, Jamie Sherwood's side continued to concede free-kicks in dangerous areas.

And this almost led to an opener.

Unnerved, Yeovil only partially cleared a set piece - Mollie Rouse fired the follow-up over the crossbar before Hannah George's looping header was just wide.

The combination of Merrick and George were not to be denied for long, though.

The visitors took the lead just shy of the half hour mark - a trademark free-kick from Merrick headed home by George.

In a game that was a super advert for WSL 2 football, the Huish Park outfit responded - Wiltshire's dipping effort striking the woodwork.

Yet, roared on by an impressive group of travelling supporters, Hunt's team continued to execute the game plan and were first to the majority of balls to be won.

They ensured the scoreline reflected their first half dominance as they doubled their advantage moments before the half-time whistle.

Wilkinson 640

Youngster Rouse broke down the right - her cutback finding Wilkinson who made no mistake from close range.

Joy at the climax of the first half turned into despair at the start of the second as Yeovil halved the deficit almost from the re-start - Wiltshire, always a threat, finishing well.

The visitors could have restored their two-goal advantage moments later.

A patient passage of play ended with Wilkinson teeing up captain Katy Moran who couldn't keep her shot down.

Sherwood's side began to put Villa under the cosh and only a perfectly-timed block denied Annie Heatherson from close range while Myers continued to smuggle each effort that came in her direction.

Their resilience was undone on 62 minutes - Wiltshire converting a cross at the back post.

In what was a feisty affair throughout, neither team's commitment, effort or endeavour could be questioned by either set of supporters.

While Villa had to be disciplined, attempting to nullify a rejuvenated Glovers attack, they still threatened with forward play of their own.

At the other end, Rouse saw a long-range strike drift over the bar as Villa looked to restore their lead.

15 minutes from the regulation 90 minutes, Yeovil were ahead for the first time.

Nicola Cousins powered home from close-range after a free-kick into the box.

Villa did not let their heads drop and carved opportunities - Wilkinson's long-range just over the target.

The high-flying Glovers made the game safe on 90 minutes - Wiltshire's lob beating Myers. Villa Ladies now head into the mid-season break.

They return to action on Sunday June 26 where the host London Bees at Coles Lane.
